My mother’s maiden name is Bartolozzi so I wonder if we are related. My grandfather John Bartolozzi was from Marliana. Heading to Florence in June with the family and was going to see if I can find any Bartolozzi’s there.

I agree that Italy (and to some extent Europe in general) gets so romanticized that people sometimes forget it’s not Disneyland – there are real problems as well. Looking forward to reading more of your perspectives!

So true. Do you know the IG profile “Venice isn’t Disneyland”? https://www.instagram.com/venezia_non_e_disneyland?igsh=cjI0c2prb3NjdXc0

I will probably subscribe but I’m immediately suspicious by your use of ‘far right’. This term is so abused now as to be almost meaningless. In the UK anything mildly to the right of the Conservative Party is ‘far right’. And why do we never hear about the ‘far left’ today, you know those commies and crazy socialists infiltrating every organisation they can?

Good luck and looking forward to reading.

ps Italy has a fine history of left of centre activity as well as a fascist past.

Hi Alan, thank you for your comment. The use of "far right" comes straight from the BBC journalist who created the piece, and I agree that it is used very appropriately. Have you had a chance to listen to the podcast episode, yet?

And yes, Italy has complicated and dark political history, including its fascist past, as well as a very strong fascist present, unfortunately. Which is exactly why it's important to, at the very least, be aware of situations like the one currently happening in Monfalcone.

Welcome, Martina! I agree with everything you wrote and think it's wonderful that you're sharing a rounded perspective on Italy. Thanks for sharing the links on AC and the mafia's influence on Italian food. These are both areas I'm researching and I appreciate the articles! x Lolly
